| Low Back Pain Physical therapists treat low back pain all the time. Modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and others can assist in decreasing muscle spasms, increase healing, and decrease swelling. After a knee injury, physical therapists work to improve the strength of the muscles in the thigh region. Most do not do any exercises for the muscles of the low back after a back injury or they attempt to perform exercises that the low back is not ready to attempt. Many will improve with time and treatment, but the pain is likely to return unless a lumbar stabilization program is began. AthletiCorePlus is the name of our lumbar stabilization program that is began with teaching the patient how to fire the transverse abdominis, which will then cause the small muscles up and down the spine (multifidi) to fire which provides stability and protection for the back. A Stabilizer Biofeedback tool is utilized to ensure the patient is firing the right muscles, without compensation.Manual therapy may be utilized to address any areas of the back that move too little, while exercises in a beginning to mid range will be used for areas that move too much or need stability. There are so many injuries to the back, so this is just an introduction to low back pain. Related Articles Should I perform a full sit up or a crunch? What is the transverse abdominis? |
