When to Buy New Shoes?

Important Points

Running Man AthletePlus Depending on your activity level, the recommendations vary. (1)

Running Man AthletePlus A physical therapist or specialized shoe store can assist in making sure you have the right shoe.

Type of ShoeActivity LevelTime for New Shoes
Walking ShoesWalk 10-15 miles a weekEvery 4-6 months or 350-550 miles
Running Shoes Run 15-20 miles a weekEvery 6-8 months or 400-600 miles
Basketball   Play 2-3 times a week. Every 4-6 months
Soccer  Play 1-2 times a week Every 8-12 months.

These recommendations above may vary depending on your weight and what surface you run, and whether you are showing signs of injury.
If you are overweight, you may need to replace shoes sooner or if you run on uneven surfaces.  If you are showing signs of injury, then
you may need to replace your shoes or see your sports medicine physician or physical therapist. When shoes start showing wear and tear
on the outside or on the tread, the inside of the shoe has already began to break down. The midsole is very important for those who have
flat feet or high arches.  The midsole is responsible for shock absorption.10-20 percent of overuse injuries could be caused by worn-out
shoes.  The percentage is higher for those who never had the right shoes for his or her feet from the beginning.  One way to keep up with
this guide is to write the date when the shoes will expire on your tongue or side of the sole.
Some recommend to buy new shoes about half way to your expiration date and rotate them.  The shoes would have more time to dry
out using this method.  We do recommend a break-in schedule where you wear your new shoes one day and then the old ones, until you are
wearing only new shoes.  This would also assist in making your older shoes last longer.  Store your shoes in a cool, dry place and taking
the insoles out and placing crumpled up newspaper will assist in drying out quicker and properly. (1) Do not wash in washing machine and
only wear them when exercising.
