Pushing the Pull cart
Using pull carts can reduce back pain. Do you push or pull?....

Running Man AthletePlus   The use of pull carts in golf encourages walking the course for exercise.
Running Man AthletePlus   The pull cart can contribute to shoulder and neck pain, as in the "rolling suitcase" syndrome.
Running Man AthletePlus   Pushing is better than pulling to protect the back.  Push the cart uphill and pull going downhill.
Running Man AthletePlus   There are now 3 wheel push carts that are made to be pushed.

Using a pull cart allows you to get exercise when walking the course.  But pull carts can contribute to back pain if not used properly.  We teach that pushing something is better than pulling when concerned with protecting the low back.  The "rolling suitcase" syndrome for travelers is comparable.  Pulling their suitcase through the airport, many travelers have complained of neck and shoulder pain.  The nerves that come from the neck to the arm, called the brachial plexus, can become irritated with the constant strain and pull.  The biceps is used in the lengthened position where it is weaker, which can lead to bicipital tendinitis.  If you are like me, you might be pulling the cart on uneven, rough ground most of the time after bad shots.  More stress and vibration on your body at different angles can occur.  If you are embarrased to be pushing a cart, you can always ride in a cart and get your exercise in at another time.

So what should you do?
Simply push the pull cart. They are a little more difficult to steer, so some people may become frustrated.  There are now 3 wheel push carts that are easier to steer.  Do not push the cart going downhill, since you will be pulling to resist gravity.  If you are going downhill, it is better to pull the cart. You can just push it every other hole or the back nine.  Every little tip can help prevent injuries or exacerbations.
